RENEE ZELLWEGER has been recalling the ‘painful’ moment she heard strangers discussing her looks on the London Underground — shortly before she stood up to one passenger.
In 2014, the Bridget Jones star, 50, prompted widespread speculation about her appearance when she turned up for a red carpet event.
She told US radio station SiriusXM this week that she ‘was on the subway in London’ when she overheard passengers talking about her.
‘They were talking about… how Hollywood ladies are so silly, and especially that Renee Zellweger,’ the Oscar-winner said.
‘And, “How could she do that? Why would she go and have surgery on her face like we wouldn’t know?” I thought, “Wow, that’s interesting”. Anyway, here’s my stop.’ She said one man was ‘still talking about how stupid I am’ when she stood up just before her station and he recognised her.
‘He said, “Oh God, you’re not, you are! But you look just like yourself!” And I said, “Yeah, it’s funny how that works, isn’t it?”’ She added that experiences like this were ‘momentarily pretty painful’.
Zellweger, who stars as Judy Garland in a new film, has previously said she has not had surgery, ‘not that it’s anyone’s business’. In 2014, she took the unusual step of issuing a statement about her changing looks, saying she was ‘living a different, happy, more fulfilling life’.
