THIS shocking picture of newly dug graves in Brazil emerged yesterday as the world suffered its largest daily rise in cases, fuelled by a record surge in the South American country.

Another 183,020 infections were reported by the World Health Organization, bringing the total who have tested positive for Covid-19 to 9million. The global death toll has passed 468,000, with the WHO warning that the virus is ‘still accelerating’ in a ‘new and dangerous phase’. Almost two-thirds of new infections were in North and South America, along with 4,473 deaths.

The number of cases has also soared in Iraq and India.

Brazil now has 1,085,038 cases and 50,617 deaths, according to its health ministry. But analysts say the true numbers could be far higher due to limited testing.

The country’s president Jair Bolsonaro has dismissed the virus as ‘over-played’ and has refused to introduce social distancing. WHO director general Tedros Ghebreyesus said: ‘We cannot defeat this pandemic with a divided world.’
