A FORMER French boxing champion faces up to five years in jail after being filmed lashing out at police during a day of ‘yellow vest’ violence in Paris.

Christophe Dettinger, 36, was caught on video using his fists and feet against officers on a bridge over the Seine during weekend anti-government protests. Police had used tear gas to stop rioters reaching the parliament building.

Police said they planned to arrest the 6ft 4ins boxer, known as the Gypsy of Massy, who is now on the run. He won France’s light heavyweight title in 2007 and held it for two years.

President Emmanuel Macron vowed ‘justice will be done’ after around 50,000 people took part in the Day of Rage, causing damage nationwide on the eighth consecutive Saturday of riots.

There were 37 arrests in Paris alone, where damage included burned-out cars and masked protesters breaking into a government ministry using a forklift truck.
