Boris Johnson ‘backed unqualified pal Jennifer Arcuri for £100k post’

Letter: Boris Johnson with Jennifer Arcuri when he was London mayor in 2013

BORIS JOHNSON recommended his friend Jennifer Arcuri for a £100,000-a-year job she was ‘not remotely qualified for’, it was claimed yesterday.

Former model Ms Arcuri, then 27, listed Mr Johnson as a reference in 2012 for a job as chief executive of the Tech City quango in charge of promoting internet firms in the capital, The Sunday Times reported.

‘I still have the letter of rec from Boris, hahaha,’ she wrote in an email leaked to the paper.

‘To think that we asked him to write us a recommendation for the CEO of Tech City is just hysterical.’

Ms Arcuri has denied an affair with Mr Johnson, 55, insisting he visited her flat in Shoreditch, east London, for IT help. She is due to speak to ITV’s Good Morning Britain today.

It will be her first broadcast interview since claims emerged that she received £126,000 of public funds and unjustified access to three foreign trade missions led by Mr Johnson as London mayor.

Four official investigations are under way into alleged misuse of public money. Mr Johnson has until the end of tomorrow to give the London Assembly private letters and emails relating to his relationship with the US businesswoman while he was mayor.

If he fails to comply, he could face a court summons to appear in person and a jail sentence of three months.

The assembly previously forced him to appear in 2017 when he faced questions over the failed Garden Bridge. Mr Johnson has insisted he will ‘comply with my old friends on the assembly’.

But Conservative former attorney general Dominic Grieve said the PM now has more questions to answer.

‘The fact that Boris Johnson was apparently prepared to provide a letter of endorsement for an extremely important job to someone who didn’t have anything remotely approaching the necessary qualifications is astonishing,’ he said. ‘It’s all the more astonishing if, as is being widely suggested, he was having a personal relationship he did not disclose.’

The PM has repeatedly refused to deny a sexual affair with Ms Arcuri but insists he had no interests to declare and had acted with ‘full propriety’.

Ms Arcuri has dismissed claims of sleeping with Mr Johnson as ‘complete bulls***’. She told the Mirror: ‘If I was banging the dude and there was some kind of, like, trail or sex tape, but there’s nothing. This is not a Monica Lewinsky.’
