BORIS Johnson’s father Stanley has claimed MI5 regularly recruits ‘off-beat characters’ as spies — having been a trainee spook himself.
But his career as a budding 007 ended when he got distracted by a blonde in a mini-skirt.
The former Tory MEP was speaking after uncorroborated claims by actor Ricky Tomlinson that the late Countdown presenter Richard Whiteley was a secret intelligence officer during the Cold War.
Mr Johnson, 76, whose son is now in charge of the MI6 intelligence service as foreign secretary, was recruited after graduating from Oxford in 1963.
He told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Her Majesty’s secret service has engaged in the recruitment of a whole host of off-beat characters over the years — and I should know because I was one of them’.
He spent nine months training but failed an exercise after being side-tracked by a ‘young woman with blonde hair and a short skirt’. She was an MI5 ‘plant’, brought in to test if he would complete his mission.
