Battling stress? Bring on pizza, eggs and soldiers

PIZZA, bacon sarnies and eggs with soldiers are among the favourite pick-me-ups for Brits feeling down.

About 80 per cent turn to their favourite meals when they need comfort food, with a pizza the top choice followed by the classic fish and chips.

Eggs scrambled, poached, fried or in mayonnaise also feature highly in a poll of 2,000 adults for egg firm Clarence Court. It found 44 per cent of people say they feel more anxious now than they did five years ago.

The average adult turns to comfort food twice a week, with ‘stress’ the most common reason. More than two-thirds choose something that reminds them of their childhood.

A traditional cup of tea is still the most popular remedy for the blues, followed by listening to your favourite music and home cooked food. Four in ten visited loved ones at least twice a week with 14 per cent looking forward to their mum’s home cooking.

Psychotherapist Christine Webber said: ‘Simple meals which transport us back to childhood can really cheer us up, and help remind us of less complicated times.

‘We are leading increasingly stressful lives, so it’s vital for us to access some comfort when we need it — and what better way to find it than by cooking and eating something simple that mum used to make.’
