A CAMPAIGNER wanting to ban the burka sparked a terrorism alert with armed police called to reports of a man dressed head to toe in female Islamic dress.

Thomas Dunn (below) had changed into the burka and went into a Debenhams store in protest at the chain’s plan to sell Muslim clothing. Police stopped him as he left the shop dressed back in his other clothes.

He was held under Section 43 of the Terrorism Act and released without charge.

Earlier, the gas engineer, 57, had been heard imitating loud prayers in the shop in Exeter. Mr Dunn, who lives in the city, said: ‘If you see someone wearing a burka you immediately think terrorist. I have nothing against Muslim people and I’m not racist in any way but I think the government should ban anyone from covering their faces.

‘When you change into a burka, the way people look at you changes. You see that initial fear in their eyes.’ Although his actions might be distressing to others, he plans to continue. ‘I’ve told the police what I’m doing,’ he said.
