CROATIA star Luka Modric has broken the ten-year duopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after winning football’s top award the Ballon D’Or in Paris last night.
The Real Madrid midfielder won the Champions League in May before helping his country reach the World Cup final in Russia where they lost 4-2 to France.
Ronaldo, winner in four of the previous five years, had to settle for second with Messi fifth and England striker Harry Kane tenth.
The inaugural women’s award was won by Norway striker Ada Hegerberg. England’s Lucy Bronze was sixth, with Fran Kirby 14th.
