OLEKSANDR USYK is in no hurry to step up to heavyweight and challenge Anthony Joshua.
The Ukrainian defended his WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO cruiserweight titles with a devastating eighth-round knockout of Tony Bellew at the Manchester Arena.
A shot at AJ’s WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight belts is tantalising as both boxers won Olympic gold in 2012 and have made giant strides in their unbeaten professional careers. But while Usyk knows he will eventually move into the top division, he quietened talk of an imminent summit with Joshua (pictured).
‘It’s too early,’ he said. ‘If you want to speak of this then you can but we need to wait a little bit.
‘You must be professional in taking those kinds of decisions. You need to take time to think through everything properly. But becoming the heavyweight champion is not what I’m dreaming of — it’s my goal, it’s what I plan to do.’
