Air we go! Off-duty pilot steps in to fly holiday jet

This is your captain speaking: Off-duty pilot introduces himself to passengers

IT could be described as the ultimate busman’s holiday…

When off-duty easyJet pilot Michael Bradley booked a trip to Alicante he never imagined he’d end up flying the plane himself.

But that’s exactly what happened when Michael turned up at Manchester airport with wife Laura and son only to learn the flight was delayed because there was no captain.

And as they waited at security, he thought he would offer his services.

High-flyer: Michael and wife Laura

Michael said: ‘I phoned up easyJet and said, “Hiya, I’m standing in the terminal doing nothing. I have got my licence with me and I’d very much like to go on holiday, and if you need a favour I’m ready to go”. Thirty-eight seconds later they called me back and said, “Please, please, pretty please with a big cherry on top, can you fly the plane?”’ Michael — dressed in holiday gear — introduced himself to passengers, telling them: ‘If you’re alright for one of your pilots to look like this today, we’ll go to Alicante.’

Where crew? Plane had no captain

Michelle Potts, who was heading to Spain with a friend, filmed him on her phone and shared the video on Facebook. ‘Legend!’ she said.
