WESTLIFE say it would have been rude not to reform after revealing superfan Ed Sheeran wrote music for them even though he didn’t know they were reuniting.
The Irish manband — Shane Filan, 39, Nicky Byrne, 40, Kian Egan, 38, and Mark Feehily, also 38 — hope they are on to a winner after the chart-topper penned their comeback track.
In an exclusive catch-up with Guilty Pleasures, the Flying Without Wings singers shared: ‘We have met Ed loads of times and he’s been really kind about us. He told us he learned how to play the guitar to our greatest hits album when he was about ten. That makes us feel old!’
Kian revealed: ‘And he wrote a number of songs for us before he even knew we were getting back together! We would love to do something with him on our reunion tour. He is a musical genius and we are massive fans.’
While 27-year-old Ed is adding some fresh magic to their discography, which includes 14 No.1 singles and 50million record sales worldwide, the lads explained why their dream-maker Simon Cowell and former bandmate Brian McFadden are not joining them for the ride.
Nicky said: ‘When we knew we were getting back together for good about six months ago, we went to Simon first. But there was never one mention of Brian’s name in that entire conversation.’
He went on: ‘Simon is hugely responsible for Westlife’s success and we are grateful to him but we decided to go with Universal as they felt they could do more with us.
‘But we would never have wanted Brian to come back. He left of his own accord. We were never given a choice in the matter because one day he said, “Lads, I am leaving”. That should have been the beginning of the end for us as a band but it made us bond and that can never be reversed.’
