A get-together for chess … but it’s all above board

Squaring up: Ruben’s chess game with his self-isolating grandfather Mick PICTURE: SWNS

CHECK this out… a young boy forced to stay away from his grandad during lockdown found a way for them to keep in touch with a game of chess.

Ruben Phillips, seven, is using FaceTime to challenge his 71-year-old grandfather Mick, who has Parkinson’s disease. Ruben’s dad Chris Phillips, 42, from Codsall, Staffordshire, said: ‘They have always been close and when the news broke my dad would be isolated, Ruben was really upset. He started thinking about ways he could see his grandad. It was all Ruben’s idea and on Saturday they both set up their chess boards. It was tricky but they worked out a grid system, similar to battleships.’

He added: ‘It’s a nice way for them to stay in touch. Plus it was extra special because it was dad’s birthday.’
