PEOPLE began returning to their homes in Florida yesterday as the remains of Hurricane Irma brought torrential rain to Georgia and South Carolina.

Around 13million people are without power, and officials warned it would take weeks to restore the supply.

State governor Rick Scott said the islands of the Florida Keys were ‘devastated’, adding: ‘I just hope everybody survived. It’s horrible what we saw.’

Key West — the largest of the Keys — remained off-limits to returning residents as engineers began inspecting the 42 bridges linking it to the mainland.

Seven deaths in Florida have been blamed on Irma, along with two in Georgia and two in South Carolina.
